Mitch Fraas is an artist living in Guatemala immersed in a Maya culture, steeped in mythology, ritual and custom. He became known for his mesoamerican influenced art featuring depictions of not so commonly held beliefs. His paintings have been described as having the ability to induce into the viewer a sensation, not unlike being under the influence of psychedelics. Fraas often paints lords, deities and animals in an effort to portray the spirit they represent, which in turn, brings the work to life. These depictions suggest
an attempt to bridge the animate with the
inanimate, and to add an ancient mystique to his
subject matter.
